Last Chance: Cookies & Cheese

Third Time’s a Charm!
We got some great and fun news last Thursday. John won the Austin Under 40 Hospitality Award! After being nominated for the past 2 years and subsequently being named a Finalist both years, he’s taking home the win this 3rd time. There were over 1300 nominations, 200 judges involved in the process, and 80 finalists (or 5 in each of the 16 categories): “For 22 years, the Austin Under 40 Awards have honored the change-makers in our city. This year perhaps more than any other, the commitment to leadership and serving the community that these winners have demonstrated is of the utmost importance and value. It is with these individuals that we will continue to move forward as a city and pave a bright future for the next generation of Austin.” A huge thank you and congrats to all the winners and finalists for your commitment to serving Austin; because I’m a proud wife, you can specifically read up on John’s win here. I am so grateful to be married to this man. He inspires me to be better every day. (In case you didn’t know, he’s currently working 4-8am and 2-6pm daily, so that he can facilitate our kids’ virtual learning from 8-2 daily - allowing me to work. Did I mention he manages to get the laundry and dishes done in that time?! What a partner!)

Just What is a Virtual Cheese Class?
You may read about it every week but have yet to go for it, because you’ve got concerns like, “I don’t just want to watch people eat and talk about cheese.” In case I haven’t made it clear (because, let’s be honest, I’m wordy), YOU GET TO EAT CHEESE TOO! Buy a ticket, pick up your cheese plate 1-4pm the day of the event, and tune in virtually via the link provided. Depending on the event, you can turn your cameras on or off, ask questions verbally or written, and engage as much or as little as you want. The fun part? You’re enjoying the tasting with us. I know many of us have Zoom fatigue, but we promise - and your feedback confirms - that this isn’t your standard zoom meeting. In fact, many of you have said it’s the “best virtual experience” you’ve had in the pandemic. Thank you! So, now you’re ready. Where to start?

Our Cheese 101: The Seven Styles of Cheese is our most popular class. It also happens to be our recommended class for first-timers AND anyone who hasn’t taken it yet. There are so many ways to categorize cheese, and this is the easiest way we adapted and came up with for ourselves when opening our shop just over ten years ago. And whether you know a lot or a little about cheese, almost everyone always learns something. Plus, we’ve got about a dozen various cheese educators and hosts, and stories vary depending on who you get. Some of us focus more on science, others more on animals, etc. To that end, we’ve even had multiple people take Cheese 101 lots of times, because it’s always different. So, join us?

Our next Cheese 101 is tomorrow, Tues 9/15 at 8pm. Get more info and/or sign up here! Ticket purchasing deadline is midnight tonight. We rarely give a menu sneak peek but here's what's on the syllabus for tomorrow (subject to tweaks based on what's tasting best):
1. Fresh Sheep Cheese & Peppedews
2. Brie de Nangis & Shallot Confit
3. Nicasio Square & Seascape Strawberry
4. Sambal Cheddar & Sourdough Cracker
5. Cave-Aged Chandoka & Dried Cherries
6. L'Amuse Gouda & Persimmon
7. Roquefort & Askinosie Chocolate

Last Chance - Cookies & Cheese

This Wednesday, John and I are leading a Cookies and Cheese Pairing, featuring Abby Jane Bakeshop freshly-baked cookies. But since she needs time to bake, the DEADLINE TO PURCHASE is midnight tonight! Then you’ll pick up your plates on Wed from 1-4 (or opt for delivery) and tune in that evening to our Facebook Live page. We’ll go live at 6pm and we’d love for you to engage with us then, but you can also watch whenever works for you that night.

Wildfire Relief - Tasting of West Coast Cheeses
We admit it. The news has got us down. Way down. And one of those headlines is the ongoing devastation from wildfires impacting the Western United States. Famed Rogue Creamery in Oregon was hit when team members lost their homes and dairy cows had to be evacuated. And they’re just one of many. When we feel paralyzed, we remember that we can do what we do best. Celebrate our makers and share their stories. So, will you join us Wed 9/23 for a Wildfire Relief Tasting? We’ll be donating 100% of profits to efforts on the west coast.

Cool Collabs: Cheese & Produce Pairing feat. Farmhouse Delivery
If we’re looking for good things that have happened since the pandemic hit, one of those is our partnership with Farmhouse Delivery. Farmhouse Delivery is an Austin-based online marketplace offering no-contact delivery on fresh produce, pasture-raised meats, chef-curated meal kits, subscription boxes, and local groceries in Central Texas. They’ve added many cheeses sourced through us to their line-up, including some standout Texas ones. As a fun collab, we’re teaming up with them this Sunday 9/20 to pair cheeses with fresh veggies and vegetable-forward sauces (like chimichurri and romesco). Get more info and/or tickets here! (only a handful left…)
Our Cheese Around Town

We know many of us are still isolating while others are practicing safe social distancing and dining. In an effort to help our restaurant partners, we want to try to keep you as up-to-date as possible. To that end, we’re excited to announce that the kitchen at Emmer & Rye is now open again! You can Dine In on their patio or order Take Out. Don’t know about you, but that one cool day we had last week made me dream of Emmer’s nationally-acclaimed Cacio e Pepe pasta dish featuring the one and only Pleasant Ridge Reserve cheese. This cheese has taken home “Best of Show” three times at the annual American Cheese Society competition. This is some action you want in on.

While you can currently get To-Go Cocktails from The Roosevelt Room, they’re eager to open their doors again this Thursday 9/17 after six months of being closed. Expect spaced out tables and limited capacity as they comply with all safety and health recommendations and requirements. Apparently, it’s National Negroni Week, so whether you celebrate there or get it to go, either option is available to meet your needs.

(Virtual) Tasting Classes Coming Up
We’ve led almost 7000 Austinites in tastings since mid-March, and ready to double it! All are virtual with curbside pickups of cheese plates (or option for local delivery). Deadline to purchase tickets is midnight the day before an event. Anything in red below is a one-time or special event we don’t do often. See what’s coming up or our full September schedule here.

Are you hosting any in person events?
Nope, all events are virtual right now.

Does your virtual event come with a physical cheese plate for tasting?
Yes! You pick up your cheese plate via contactless curbside the day of the event (or you may be able to add on delivery for a fee to some addresses). Refrigerate your plate. Then pull it out of the fridge 45min before your event start.

Do you deliver?
While we don’t personally deliver, we do partner with Favor Fleet and DropOff Couriers to some locations. You don’t have to do that work though. Just order as you normally would, and we’ll handle the delivery part.

Can I have a private virtual party or event?
Yes! We’ve teamed up with individuals for special occasions like anniversaries and milestone birthdays, with companies to offer teambuilding appreciation events, and with nonprofits alike to help us all still cope with and celebrate through this pandemic. You need a group of at least 12 for a private party (at $40pp).

Can you ship my cheese plate?
Unfortunately, no. We cut cheese the day of the event. And what makes for good class plates (ie 1 ounce sample portions) does not make for good shipping conditions. However, we do offer a Cheese Class in a Box that we can ship. And if you want, get a group of 12 purchases together, and we’ll ship to your locations around the United States AND host a live event guided by one of our cheesemongers.
